This video shows the problems I had installing a solar controller and roof panel on my Forest River Wildwood FSX. This is a new 2022 camper. It was “pre-wired” for a Go Power solar system. Which essentially means that it supposed to have a wire running from the roof down to the battery and it had connectors up on the roof. I could not find hardly any information about what the wire was supposed to look like, etc. online.
You don’t need to use a Go Power brand. (I call it Go Solar by accident in the video. ) The roof connectors are universal. I’m sure Go Power has some sort of promotional arrangement with Forest River so you might buy their controller and panels. The Go Power controller evidently is recessed into the wall. It would not have worked in this instance, because there’s not enough room to put it in there anyway.. The sticker is supposed to be a template to cut a large hole for the GoPower recessed controller.
As you will see from the video, the pre-wire is not anywhere near where Forest River indicates it was supposed to be. This caused me to have to pull the wall panel back and try to find the wire, which was another stud bay over. You can’t move the wire over to the new hole because you need to somehow get it through the studs which would require really disassembling it and destroying the paneling worse than it is. So now there’s an extra hole right there!
Another thing learned ….the battery connection for the controller (wire in the wall) does not go through the battery disconnect switch, it remains hot and goes straight to the battery. So if you want to be careful not to arc it, you need to disconnect the battery.
